John W. Gilbert posted a condolence
Tuesday, December 11, 2012
To Peter's Children, Grandchildren and extended family and friends:
As the anniversary of Peter's passing approaches J. Ray Gilbert and I, John Gilbert, still often recall our past interactions with Peter and the tiling and drainage work Peter did for Ray on his properties in Aldborough and Dunwich Townships. We also often speak to each about many funny and amusing experiences we had when being around and working with Peter in the drainage business.
Our hearts go out to all of Peter's children as the anniversary of his passing approaches. We want you to all understand that we both viewed Peter was a good man, he mattered to both my father and I. Peter was a friend and mentor to both of us. We each learned a great deal from Peter that we still carry with us today. Some elements of Peter are in both my father and I. Peter will always be carried within us and be part of who we are even though he is no longer physically with any of us. Time moves forward and can not be halted nor tuned back. Peter is now gone but CERTAINLY not forgotten. Ray and John Gilbert will remember Peter and speak highly of him as long as we both live.
In closing, I wish to leave you all with "an excited utterance" I heard from Peter on more than one occasion as I worked for him across the various regions of Elgin county Peter normally worked in. "TELEPHONE CABLE!!!!!!!" As Peter mouthed these words he would become pale take his hat off, scratch his head and then move forward with his work. For those who do not understand the basis of this story I will provide some brief background information. Bell Canada had meticulously hidden underground telephone cables all across Elgin county that constantly laid in wait for Peter just to spoil his day. "TELEPHONE CABLE!!!!" I can still vividly see in my mind, the vision or short pieces of telephone cable sticking out each side of the trench that Peter's tiling machine had just cut. Bell Canada had once again spoiled Peter's day, with more of its insidious, hidden underground telephone cable. At least now Bell Canada can no longer give Peter ulcers and spoil his day with its nasty underground telephone cable. Peter is now in a more peaceful place.
May You Rest In Peace Now Peter.
Sincerely
Ray and John Gilbert, formerly of the Aldborough-Dunwich Townline (current Dunborough Line)at the current Gilbert Line (formerly the 14th concession of Aldborough)

John and J. Ray Gilbert posted a condolence
Tuesday, December 20, 2011
J. Ray Gilbert (London) and John Gilbert (Oakville), both formerly of the Aldborough - Dunwich Townline (now the Dunborough Line)RR # 1 Wallacetwon are sorry to read of Peter's passing. Your father was a wonderful and unique person. He will be missed by all who ever came into contact with him. His children are in our thoughts and prayers. We both considered Peter a friend. We will miss him and his way. John worked for Peter during his summer breaks from university in the late 1960's and early 1970's and fondly recalls all the knowledge Peter bestowed upon him regarding the important trade of drainage contracting. Peter taught John how to use devining rods to locate existing drains prior to attempting to tap into them with a new run of tile. Peter also taught John that telephone cables buried across farmer's fields are a real liability to drainage contractors. J. Ray Gilbert knew Peter and trusted his work as a drainage contractor from the beginning of Peter's work as a drainage contractor. Peter drained / tiled all of the former Gilbert properties in Dunwich and Aldborough townships that abutted the Aldborough - Dunwich Townline near the "Gilbert Line" (14th concession of Aldborough Towndhip) and the 9th concession of Dunwich Township during the 1960's. Peter's work has stood the test of time and still effectively drains the former Gilbert properties in 2011. This is a true testament of Peter's significant skill as a drainage contractor and ingrained tenacity that served him well. John and Ray will sincerely miss Peter as both a friend and mentor.

To the Timmerman Family: We are so sorry to read about your Dad's passing. Your dad was a wonderful person. I can remember eating supper at your place many times with Joanne and Sandra. Your dad would be sitting at the table not saying a word just taking in all the kids activities for day. Your mom would be busy baking. Later, I would see your Dad in the grocery store and he would talk for hours about what the kids where up to and his precious grandchildren. He will be missed. Lean on each and your wonderful memories to help you through this time. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Helen and I, Hubert, extend our condolences to the Timmermans family. We regret that we are unable to be present at Peter's funeral because of age restrictions but never forgot the day we visited his Dad at his house in Bakel, Holland, only to find that he had passed away that very day. On the day of his funeral we were able to be present on Peter's behalf, as he was unable to attend himself then all the way from Canada.
