Thinking of all of you as you gather once again in Watford and at "the Port". Sad times but happy memories and I am certain there will be laughter along with tears. Deepest sympathies . Ann and Georgie

We didn't have the pleasure of meeting Alex until his 90th year, yet he and his loving Muriel were two bright stars who will never dim in our memories.

We are so sorry to hear about the passing of your father. I worked for your dad for over 8 years, and felt that he was more than a boss, he was a mentor. Your parents were very respectable in everything they did, and represented, I feel very lucky to have been a part of their lives, and to have worked with them.

I'm writing on behalf of the Pleiter family to convey our condolences on your loss. My father Derk was a crew mate of Alex's - the pilot of the Lancaster crew for which Alex was the trusted and revered navigator. Our entire family was deeply touched when Alex made the trip from Watford to London to pay his respects at the visitation for my father who passed away on June 14. Even though the journey was a bit of a challenge for him (he confessed to becoming lost when he followed "inadequate" directions to the funeral home, courtesy of a misinformed fellow on a road crew), he told me that he was determined to make the trip. "I'm representing Arnold as well," he explained, referring to the (now) lone survivor of their crew, Arnold Graham, who called me last night with the sad news of Alex's passing. I spoke with Alex at some length that sad day and was so grateful that he'd made the trip. He told several stories about Dad, and his pain at his loss somehow made our pain just a little bit easier to bear. We were both a bit teary-eyed when we said our goodbyes, but then it was a pretty emotional day. I may have spoiled the moment, though, when I asked the funeral director to give Alex directions. "That won't be necessary," he said quite firmly. Of course, I didn't argue the point, but just wished him safe travels. I also remember fondly visiting with Alex and Muriel in Port Franks when our family was vacationing at a cottage at nearbyIpperwash Beach (in the mid-90s I think). We had a lovely meal and great conversations and I thoroughly enjoyed hearing our parents swap stories. Theirs was a remarkable generation and it seems to me that our parents epitomized the strength, resilience and good humour that were the hallmarks of this amazing group. Arnold gave me pause last night when he said, "Derk and Alex got us back safe from all our missions, and there were some hairy ones. I probably owe them my life." I told him how glad I was that they did, since I wouldn't be here if they hadn't! We laughed at that, but it's true - and for an increasingly large group of people as each generation comes along. The Minister who officiated at Dad's funeral recited 'High Flight' and used the imagery of flying and the peace and freedom that it brings to great effect. It was a comfort to his family; perhaps it's something your family might also find comforting. Safe travels, Alex. Shelley Pleiter Kingston, ON spleiter@business.queensu.ca

To the Family of Alex, I had the good fortune to be hired at McLaren's pharmacy by Alex just before he retired. Though retired, I recall that he filled in on many a day and night in the years that followed. I have fond memories of many quiet Friday nights that we would spend in conversation while working. He had so many great stories to tell about his flying experiences, his family and life in general. Though I was not officially the pharmacist's assistant, Alex displayed great patience and confidence in me by allowing me to work beside him in the dispensary. I learned so much about so many things in those years at the pharmacy and I have Alex to thank. I was invited to spend the afternoon at Muriel and Alex's cottage once in Port Franks and remember the hospitality and genuine caring that they expressed to me. Though I moved away from Watford for university, your dad was always sure to ask my mom how I was doing, and to say 'hi'. That really meant a lot and again, validated the importance that he placed on the relationships he established in Watford and the surrounding community. You have lost two very special people in a short amount of time, but I hope that it is of comfort to you that they are now together. I will always remember Alex - academic, storyteller, gentleman and friend. I wish you peace and strength in the days ahead. Sincerely, Juanita Vandenberg

We extend our deepest sympathy to Bob, Jim & Margaret & their families. Your Dad was a true gentleman, who contributed in many ways to the Watford Community in his quiet, professional manner. Whether it be at the Drug Store, Church, or local activities, when Alex spoke, people listened! Alex was blessed to have Muriel with him for 67 years, & further blessed with very successful children & grandchildren, who he proudly talked about. Our small community has lost a very special man.
